The Masterpiece Crypt : Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery Historical Landmark

The Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery Historical Landmark lies at the entrance of the town of Nagcarlan, adjacent to the towns Liliw and Rizal and the City of San Pablo in the province of Laguna. At approximately 103KM south of Metro Manila, it takes about 2 and a half hours to be greeted by this Masterpiece Crypt.

Built in 1845 by a Franciscan Friar named Vicente Velloc, this masterpiece stands at about 2km south of the Roman Catholic Church. Its elaborated architecture is truly a wonder to behold. Enclosed in an octagonal wall, the Gate and the Chapel are positioned directly opposite of each other. You have to cross a brick path that leads to the Chapel. Constructed in perfect symmetry, it truly is one of its kind in the country.

Stories have been told of a tunnel connecting the church and the crypt of the cemetery. Some say there were processions held from the church to the cemetery where the priest gets to leave the church last but somehow managed to arrive at the cemetery first. The tunnel entrance is said to be two niches on either side of the crypt altar and joining to make one tunnel below. However, there are no evidence that can prove its existence today.

This is just one of the interesting places Nagcarlan has to offer. I'll be posting more of Nagcarlan so watch out for more..

The shot above is a panorama taken at the middle of the brick path.
